SUMMARY:The Ecology of Resilience with Tom Wessels
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a captivating afternoon with Tom Wessels! \nTom Wessels is a terrestrial ecologist who has conducted programs on ecology\, natural history\, and sustainability across the country for over four decades. He is professor emeritus at Antioch University where he founded their masters degree program in Conservation Biology. Tom is the author of numerous books with Reading the Forested Landscape and The Myth of Progress being his best known. \nIn this event\, Tom will begin with an introduction to key ecological principles that promote biodiversity and foster resilient ecosystems. Following the overview\, we will embark on a walk through the woods\, where Tom will highlight real-world examples of these principles in action. \nAfterward\, we’ll transition to the garden for a hands-on discussion. You’ll learn how specific no-till and regenerative agricultural practices align with and reinforce the ecological principles discussed. Finally\, Tom will offer insights on how climate change poses challenges to large industrial farms and why small\, resilient community farms may be essential for future well-being. \nThis event is an excellent opportunity to deepen your understanding of ecology\, engage in thoughtful discussion\, and explore practical ways to support a sustainable future. \nDuration: Approximately 2 hours \nCost: By donation. Sliding scale suggested contribution of $10-$50 per person. Your donations help to support more on-farm programming!

SUMMARY:Homeschool on the Farm
DESCRIPTION:A curiosity-filled\, place-based science and agriculture program for homeschooled students.\n  \nIn today’s fast-paced\, digital age\, it’s more important than ever to get children outside in nature and give them a clear idea about where their food comes from. It’s our responsibility to raise a generation of conscientious young adults\, and what better way to do this than to teach children about the benefits of regenerative\, sustainable agriculture? \nHomeschool on the Farm is an inquiry-based program where students use the farm as their outdoor classroom—exploring the production fields\, forested areas\, aviary\, and livestock areas. \nStudents build their science literacy as they explore\, through making observations\, generating questions\, collecting and analyzing data\, and reflecting on their peers’ investigations and questions. During our time together\, we think critically about important questions\, such as: How does food grow? What do plants need to survive? Why are seeds so important? What is soil and why do plants need it? Who are pollinators and what happens during pollination? And what is healthy food and how do I cook it? \n
